The Tamale House

The Tamale House is anything but fancy. But what the small, family-run restaurant lacks in refinement it makes up for with freshly made food served with a smile. Owners Tony and Magdalena Jump opened the restaurant about six months ago and say they hope to spread the word about tamales by offering tamale-making classes in the near future.

The chow: Standard Mexican fare. Tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tostadas, chiles rellenos and four types of tamales: cheese and jalapeƱo; pork cooked in a traditional red sauce; chicken prepared with a traditional mild green sauce; and a very tasty barbecue pork ($2 each). A good tamale should be moist and tender, and the barbecue pork -- with a tangy sauce that goes surprisingly well with the masa (dough) for a twist on the dish -- and the more traditional pork live up to expectations. The chicken was a little on the dry side but that was easily forgiven one bite into a taco wrapped in a freshly made tortilla. The carne asada (steak) taco ($2.95) is large and delicious. Refried beans add a nice extra layer of flavor and enhance the chicken tostada ($3.75), which is big enough to be considered a meal. Click hear to read more....
